JOSEPH HAYES
Author - Producer
Success stories are uncommon in America these days, but Joseph Hayes and his wife, Marrijane, are outstanding examples of the premise that you can do anything so long as you have the talent. Married while still students at Indiana University, this collaboration has been a happy one for many reasons. Soon after graduation, they came to New York and, before long, were writing plays for amateur production. At the same time, while some of America's outstanding magazines were buying his short stories, Mr. Hayes was by-lining plays for radio and television production. In 1953, Joseph Hayes' first novel, "The Desperate Hours" was published and soon became a Literary Guild selection. After heading the best seller lists for many months, Mr. Hayes adapted it into a successful Broadway play and, later, a motion picture. In 1957 the Hayeses collaborated on the novel, "Bon Voyage" which brought them further literary success and is now a successful film starring Fred MacMurray and Jane Wyman. Mr. Hayes' new book, "Don't Go Away Mad," a novel about the theatre, will be published this month, by Random House. Best sellers and smash hits notwithstanding, stage center in the Hayes menage is occupied by their three most important creations, Gregory, Jason and Daniel.
