Lucky Gagin arrives is San Pablo at fiesta time. He is looking for Frank Hugo, a big-time crook who killed his best friend over a blackmail scheme. Lucky intends to collect the money his friend didn't, but Hugo has other plans. Along the way Lucky is assisted by Pancho, a good-natured, local carny whose carousel provides the significance of the film's title; and Pila, the mysterious, childlike waif who sees him through his darkest hour. Also on hand are a femme fatale with questions as to where her loyalties lie and an F.B.I. man who may or may not be on the take. Montgomery's performance as the cynical anti-hero is first rate. The genre is film noir but the film takes on an unexpected and unique atomosphere due to Montgomery's style of directing, the unusual fiesta setting and a remarkably effective soundtrack. A must see.
