| Synopsis: German immigrant Adolph Wagenkampf runs a modest barber shop in Harristown, Pennsylvania, is happily married and the father of five children. Adolph has the chance to invest in a building and loan association along with Joe Higginson, but when he finds his son Ludwig has a mild case of tuberculosis the money must go to send the child to a dry climate to recover. Thus the pattern is set and we move forward in time...his children are now grown, Joe Higginson has become rich and Higginson's spoiled son Nick has not improved with age. As the story unfolds we see Adolph make one sacrifice after another to help his children as they make various mistakes in their life decisions, Ludwig is ashamed of his immigrant background, Johnny steals some money from the company he works for and Alma falls for Nick whose father threatens to disown him if he marries her. This is a sentimental tale with a happy ending. Montgomery doesn't have too much to do in this one and the role only offers a few good moments. |
